Make Up Forever HD Foundation Review and Photos

This isn't a newly released foundation, but since MUFE isn't sold widely in Australia I never had the chance to try it until now. I bought it at IMATS a few weeks ago at a discounted price of around $42 (I think in Australia it's $59), having read lots of rave reviews about it previously. I've been wearing it on and off for the past two weeks so I feel it's about time I give you my thoughts on it, especially since some of you have asked for it.

"The HD Foundation is an oil-free medium-to-full coverage liquid foundation which covers skin imperfections, while remaining invisible on-screen and in real life. Its extremely fine texture is supple and easy to apply. Enriched with moisturizing agents, it leaves the skin soft and radiant. " -  Make Up For Ever website

Colour
I'm normally NC25 and I was matched to #120 which is slightly yellow based. I find the colour to be a perfect match to the skin on my face, however as my neck and chest is a shade darker I would have preferred to have gone up a shade so I don't get the ghostly white face/dark chest look. I use a darker powder over it to make it match my neck and chest.

Coverage
This is meant to be medium to full coverage, but I think it's more sheer to medium. Normally I can get away without having to use a concealer to hide any blemishes, but with this I have to use a concealer as the coverage it gives me is very sheer. I normally powder it down with something that has some coverage, e.g. MAC MSFN, just to hide the redness and blemishes.

Longevity
For reference, my skin is normal to dry and most foundations last for 10 - 12 hours on me. This however is not one of them. I've never worn this foundation on its own, I've always powdered it down, and even then I only get 5 hours maximum wear before this starts to wear off around my nose and chin. This is the part I was most disappointed with.

Overall
I feel this foundation photographs much better than it looks in real life. HERE is a FOTD with it. In photos it makes my skin look almost airbrushed, in real life it emphasises dryness and flakiness. Here is a close up of my skin with this foundation on, and powdered with Sephora Powder Foundation. I'd have to say it looks pretty good in the photo, but trust me, in real life it was very flaky.

This might suit someone with blemish free, normal to oily skin, that only requires a little bit of coverage.

Just so this is not wasted, I'll be using it as a mixer foundation, i.e. mix it with my HG Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse to thin it down a bit or change the colour. I wish I liked it better, but unfortunately I was not impressed.

Have you tried this foundation? Any thoughts?

  1. Thanks so much for this review, Lilit! I very nearly purchased it interstate a couple months back, but I too read reviews like yours, saying it is meant to be full coverage but is more sheer to medium {not my preference}. I love the idea of owning a MUFE product {as I don't have any} but I might be best purchasing something else from them instead. I have to say though, your skin DOES look absolutely beautiful and flawless in the photos! :)

By the way, how did you purchase a Sephora product?!

  2. Hi Lilit, I haven't tried this foundation before, but I have been tempted by it. It's a shame that it doesn't last throughout the day. There's nothing worse than coming coming home from work to find that your foundation has disappeared!

  4. You know i'm so glad you posted this because I was about to splurge on it without really having tried it. My skin is oily AND dry, so anything that fades quickly or emphasizes flakes? No way. <3 Thanks Lilit.

  5. Disappointing! I have oily skin so I'm sure it would last for even less time on me!

  6. Thanks so much for the review!
I have scars to cover so i need more coverage.

  7. I'll definitely be skipping this! Considering most foundations last about 5 hours on me, this would probably last half an hour :P I wonder why everyone raves about it?

  9. I love your honest review. At first, I also found this foundation incredibly fussy to work with. If you have any sort of dry patches, it will definitely accentuate it. However as my skin got better, it looks much better. And yes, it does photograph very well.

  10. Interesting they matched you for 120. Based off your picture alone I'd saw more of a #125 -- fits better (120 is more yellow and 125 is more beige) 120 can be a little TOO yellow sometimes. 125 would have probably been better too with summer hitting Sydney :)

  11. Thank you for doing this review! I have been hearing a lot of bad reviews on this foundation and I think I will save my money on this one and opt for another foundation.

  13. Ebony - as I tweeted, I bought it from the actual Sephora store in Europe last year, wish Sephora actually shipped to AU!

Melanie - this doesn't even last half a day at work for me, so I usually just wear it on the weekend when I don't need my makeup to look flawless. Disappointing.

Mercedes - thanks hun, glad you liked it.

Eden - You have weird skin babe, dry and oily? Yeah, save your money and get something that would work better on your crazy skin! LOL

Ella - Considering it's so expensive you just don't want to risk it.

MSodapop - this will definitely not cover scars. Glad this helps.

Silhouette Screams - I think because it looks so good in photos every raves about it, but considering most of us don't live our lives through photos and need something to look good in real life, this unfortunately doesn't work.

    Jen - thanks babe.

Kristie - I'm glad it works for you now, I think it would look beautiful on people with clear complexions... I'm not one of them! LOL.

Kristine - I feel 120 is definitely too light and yellow for me, which is why I use a darker powder on top. The skin on my face is fairly light due to SPF use, and the MUA matched me to my face skin, instead of my neck/chest. But I'm just not going to risk it now and go up to 125. Thanks for the tip though.

Dani - glad it helps, this is definitely one foundation you want to sample first before splurging on.

  14. Ive tried this foundation once and really hated it.. It felt heavy and it emphasised my pores like no other.. Wasn't impressed with it at all..

Glad to know someone else shares the same thoughts as moi! ;)

  15. Vanity - hope the review helps.

Delyteful Speaks - Oh yeah, I'm totally with you on that one. I'll just have to mix it with other foundations and use it up, otherwise that was money wasted.

  16. I personally had high hopes of this foundations but didn't like it at all after trying it.

U're right first of all it doesn't provide full coverage, and I find that it does shows ur face flaws rather than hiding them.

    I'm not using it anymore.

  17. Nouf - I was definitely like you, such high hopes but alas. It just looks so good in photos though, which is why I think it's popular.

  18. I thought exactly the same thing as you do. I have an oily tzone and this just seemed to make it completely worse I felt wet!!! I found it much better mixed with my Revlon Photo Ready foundation, I've used mine all up now and I won't be trying to repurchase xxx

  19. Lauren Rose - it'll probably take me a while to use it up, as I'll be mixing it as well with other foundations. And yep, definitely no repurchase.

  21. Too bad it makes dryness more noticeable! This definitely wouldn't work for me. Does look lovely in photos though!

  22. It's a shame this didn't work for you at all!
I happen to really really like this foundation - it's my go to foundation for a night out.
No comments on its longevity though, I've never really noticed because I rarely wear this during the day :-p
It does feel a little heavy on the skin, and I wasn't a fan of it when my skin wasn't at its best but you're right about it being nicer on someone blemish free.. I like this foundation a lot more now that my skin has improved.
Sucks you didn't like it, it is pretty pricey! :$

  23. I got this a few weeks ago in 125 Sand. So far it's worked really well, skin looks great and like you said in photos looks airbrushed. I would highly recommend it but still not sure if this is 'the one'...still on the hunt for it! Great post and blog. x
