Femme Boulevard #2 - Modern Vintage

Hi lovelies, it's Femme Boulevard time. Those of you new to the blog, Femme Boulevard is a blogger group that does a themed makeup look once a month. The theme each month is the same for all, but the way each blogger interprets it is different. The theme for today's look is Modern Vintage.

As tempted as I was to do a 50s inspired look with a sleek cat eye and red lipstick, I decided that it's not too much of a challenge for me as lately all I seem to be doing is a cat eye. So instead I looked to the 20s for inspiration, another favourite era of mine. The classic 20s look has a matte face with rosy blush on the apples of the cheeks, eyes are heavy and dark with almost smudged eyeshadow. Brows are plucked and drawn downwards, while lips are deep red with an exaggerated cupid's bow.

Since the look for today was modern vintage, I wanted to do a 20s look that was actually wearable. Instead of opting for the skinny brows and making my eyes look like I'd been crying for days, I decided to still use the colour palettes of the 20s but make the overall look something more appropriate to current days.

Here are the products that I used.

Friday's letters #8

My little boy who will be 1 year old in 2 weeks!
Dear Friday,
I know I didn't write to you for 2 whole weeks. I was busy, sorry, before I realised it you had turned to Saturday so there was no point in writing to you that late. I'm here now though, but I can't promise this won't happen again.

Dear Luca,
How is it that you are almost 1? I still remember the puffy faced little newborn that you were, completely dependant on us for everything. Now you want to assert your independence, especially when it comes to eating, sleeping, being strapped into the pram, being strapped into the car seat, having your nappy changed, having your clothes changed... basically you just want to show us you're the boss.  Ok baby, we get it. Now can I change your clothes without you screaming the house down?

Dear Labour Party,
Thanks for injecting some excitement into Australian politics. Now can you go back to running the country instead of playing leadership ping pong?

Dear Aldi,
I actually did my full grocery shopping there the other day. Yes I saved money, but I don't know if the stress of having to pack my own bags while the cashier hurls my items at me at super speed is worth it. And I'm not even mentioning the fact that there appears to be no rhyme or reason to the way your stores are laid out #defieslogic

Dear Google Reader,
So this is goodbye, looks like after 1 July you are no more. I did enjoy catching up on my favourite blogs through you, but I have since found other alternatives - Bloglovin' and Feedly. So goodbye and good luck!

Oh, where have you been hiding?

Don't you love it when you find a beauty product in your stash that you'd completely forgotten about? Well, I found this little gem hiding in the bottom of one of my draws sitting there gathering dust. I actually bought this lipstick over a year ago (!) and even included in a haul post that I did yet somehow forgot about it. Ooops. Sign of having too many lipsticks? Surely not. Actually I lie, I did wear it in this post, but that's about it. So yes, it's practically brand new and I feel like I've just bought a new lipstick! The colour is called Coral Vibrations and it's by Elizabeth Arden. Such a vibrant shade isn't it? Perfect for summer, or whenever you feel like brightening your look.

Has this happened to you? You buy makeup then tend to forget about it?

Ummm... so, I may have been hauling

When I was on maternity leave I didn't do that much shopping. Don't get me wrong, I still spent a considerable amount of time at the shops, but mainly for little coffee outings or to do the grocery shopping. With a little one in tow it was a bit difficult to browse the stores for make up and clothes. But ever since I returned to work a few weeks ago, well lets just say that many a lunch break is spent at the shops! You see, I work very close to a Westfields, plus there are many discount chemists and cosmetic stores within a 5 minute walk so do you blame me? Here's what I've been hauling this month.

The one where I had my portrait done and I wasn't wearing makeup! (And a giveaway!)

This post is sponsored by Nuffnang

Remember a few weeks ago I mentioned that I was trying a new face wash by Clearasil? (Click HERE for that post). Well, as part of that campaign I was given the opportunity to have my portrait sketched. By a real artist. Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool too. The aim of course being that I would feel comfortable in my own skin to put my best face forward.

So on the day of my portrait session I glammed up, put on a bright lippy, and went to meet the artist.... Only to be told "Ummm... you know you're not supposed to be wearing makeup, right?".  Actually, no. If I had known I had to go bare-faced I would have done my best to fake a no-makeup-makeup look! But instead here I was standing in the artist's room and wiping my makeup off before sitting down to have my portrait sketched... makeup free! No carefully concealed spots, no contouring, no rosy cheeks, no glossy lips.

Lorac Mint Edition Palette - review and swatches

A few weeks ago Tarraz was offering $10 shipping to Australia from Sephora so I thought I'd take up the offer and make my first online Sephora purchase. After a lot of deliberation I settled on the Lorac Mint Edition Palette because a. I'd never owned anything from Lorac before, and b. the retro mint and silver packaging was too cute to pass up on... yeah, as you can see I do suffer from "judging a book by its cover" syndrome.

Put it in neutral

I hate clashing my nails with my outfits - for example if I'm wearing lilac nails, I'll never wear a brown or a tan outfit with it as lilac and tan look horrible together. Similarly if I'm wearing orange nail polish, then no pinks or cool tones for my clothes thank you. But because I don't have the time to change the colour of my nails as often as I'd like to, neutral shades are what I gravitate towards. These are colours that make my nails look tidy and clean and go with almost any outfit.

Here are my favourite neutrals.

The swatches, left to right (or thumb to little finger) are:

  • Polished London "Mauve Mandy" - a purpled grey cream. You can see full swatches of these HERE
  • Covergirl "Everbloom"- this is from the Outlast Stay Brilliant range and this particular colour lasts about 5 days without chipping.
  • Essie "Lady Like" - this beautiful "greige" shade goes with everything and best of all doesn't give mannequin hands.
  • OPI "Skull & Glossbones" - a grey cream with green undertones. This is from the Pirates of the Caribbean collection so it's quite old, but I've seen this shade at many OPI stands.
  • Lime Crime "Milky Ways" - I love the way this looks on my nails, a beautiful cream colour, unfortunately it chips after about 2 days even with a top coat.

What are some of your favourite neutral shades?

Jane Iredale Glow Time BB Cream review & photos

Recently I was given a chance to trial the new Jane Iredale Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream (phew, that's a mouthful!). This BB cream is SP25, water resistant for 40 minutes, promises to smooth and brighten skin and minimise environmental damage. I've been wearing this on and off for about a month now, so it's time I give you my verdict.

Who says you can't wear gold eyeshadow in winter?

When you think of gold eyeshadow what season do you imagine? A warm summer's day no doubt. Perhaps paired with bronzed cheeks and a sheer lipgloss. Well, it's officially winter in Australia but do you think the cold weather was going to stop me from wearing this pretty little pan of gold on my lids? Nope, of course not!

FOTD with Rouge Bunny Rouge

Ever since I bought my Rouge Bunny Rouge eyeshadows a couple of weeks ago (review HERE) that's all I've been wearing. You might think a couple of weeks is a short time in the eyeshadow-world, but trust me, when you have more eyeshadows than there are days in a year (ok, slight exaggeration), anything worn for more than 3 consecutive days is a long time!

Anyway, my favourite way to wear it is by wearing Snowy Egret on the lid and inner corner of the eye, and Delicate Hummingbird in the crease, outer corner and on bottom lashline. Some days I'll line my eyes with a gel eyeliner, sometimes I'll just smudge a pencil for a lived-in smokey look.

The full makeup breakdown is as follows.

Rouge Bunny Rouge Eyeshadows x 2 - swatches, review and comparison

It was only a matter of time before I jumped on the Rouge Bunny Rouge bandwagon. The cult beauty brand originated in Moscow in 2006 before enchanting the rest of the world with fairytale inspired products. The products themselves are so luxurious, with opulent packaging reminiscent of old Tsarist times.

I don't know why it took me so long to get anything from RBR, perhaps it was price (it's on the higher end of the scale), or because of inaccessibility (for a while they didn't ship to Australia). Either way, I'm so glad I tried the brand, the only problem is I want more! I bought 2 eyeshadow refills from BeautyBay as they have free international shipping. And the refills worked out at around $22 each, vs $35 for the ones in a pot. I'm just going to put them in my Z-Palette anyway so I don't need the pot.

Rouge Bunny Rouge long lasting eyeshadows - Snowy Egret and Delicate Hummingbird
These two eyeshadows are from the "When Birds Are Singing" collection, a collection inspired by exotic birds. Snowy Egret is a frosted white with golden iridescence. Delicate Hummingbird is a purplish plum with silver iridescence. The colours themselves aren't anything unique, but the quality of these eyeshadows is what sets them apart. They are so buttery smooth and highly pigmented, and best of all there is no fallout.

Friday's letters #7

Floral Crown image from Pinterest*

Dear Floral Crowns,
You're everywhere at the moment - in my Pinterest feed, on the heads of fashion bloggers, or being crafted by the hands of talented DIYers. But... do people over the age of 3 actually wear you in real life? Outside of weddings and garden parties that is. Because unless I see you on the head of Lorraine from accounts, I ain't wearing you.

Dear The Game Of Thrones,
Five minutes into Episode 1 of Season 1 and I wrote you off as an evil fantasy show with very brutal themes. I avoided you like the plague for 2 whole years. Then somehow I gave you another chance. And I got hooked. Oops. Now I'm fully up to date. You're brilliant. Sorry I doubted you.

Dear Black and White Stripes,
Don't ever go out of fashion.

Dear Candy Crush Saga,
Seriously dude, can you get even more addictive? And 5 lives is never enough!

Dear Pregnant Friend,
The most useless piece of advice you'll receive is "Sleep now because when the baby's here you won't be sleeping". Yes it's true that when the baby's here you'll never sleep again, but if you think sleeping now will help you in the future, the answer's no. You don't create some kind of sleep bank that you deposit delicious sleep into, only to withdraw on needy days when you're sleep deprived. So if you don't feel like sleeping now, don't. Because it's not going to help you when the baby's here anyway so might as well enjoy your non-sleep!

*Image credit - as hard as I tried I could not find the source for this image. I found it on Pinterest which refered me to a tumblr page which then said the source was Pinterest! So if this image is yours, please let me know and I'll give credit to you ASAP!

6 Great Eyeshadows for a Single Colour Smokey Eye

I was going to title this post "The lazy girl's guide to the single colour smokey eye" but then thought it's too long! But yes, these are great eyeshadows for when you're feeling lazy, or time poor, but still want to look like you've made an effort with your makeup. All of these eyeshadows look great worn on their own all over the lid. They don't need a highlight colour or a darker shade to give it shape. They just require some careful blending around the edges and you're done. What makes them so perfect is that they all have a slight shimmer, giving a depth of colour, which plays off with your eyes' natural contours.  Here are my favourites that get a regular workout from me.

5 to Try: The Great Gatsby inspired lipsticks

I haven't seen The Great Gatsby yet, and to be quite honest I'm not sure I'll see it soon either (blame the fact that I have a baby and right now I choose sleep over sitting for 3 hours in the cinema hall), but I do love seeing the costumes and makeup from the film. Here are 5 lipsticks that I thought would not look too out of place if you were going for a Gatsby inspired look.

  1. Australis Longwear lipstick in Glam* - a matte dark wine shade with brown undertones. Previous review HERE
  2. Rimmel Kate matte lipstick in #107 - a super creamy yet matte berry shade. Previous review HERE
  3. MAC lipstick in RiRi Woo - a deep true red with blue undertones. Previous review HERE
  4. The Make Up Store lipstick in Black Currant* - a creamy deep purple shade with silver sparkles.
  5. Wet n Wild lipstick in Mauve Outta Here - a soft mauve shade, very pretty. Previous review HERE
