My wedding makeup

A lot has been said about Kate (make that Catherine) Middleton doing her own wedding day makeup, some positive, some negative. Seriously though why shouldn't she do her own makeup? If she knows how to do it (which she clearly does!), then I say go for it. Sure she had over a billion pairs of eyes scrutinizing her on the day, but just because she can afford the world's best makeup artists doesn't mean she has to go with them.

I know lots of people that have done their own makeup, including Ling from The Best Beauty Blog, who did a post on it a few days ago and whose blog I stole this post idea from! (Check out her blog, she had not one but 2 weddings!) I too did my own wedding makeup just over 2 years ago... I only had 70 pairs of eyes looking at me on the day, and if I had to do it again even though there are a few things I'd change, I still wouldn't get a professional.

I'm no expert, but years of applying my own makeup means I know how my face works, which are the bad bits on my face that need concealing, which are the good bits that need highlighting.

This was in my pre-blogging days, I feel I'm more adventurous with my makeup now (and I was also 3kgs heavier then). Whilst I don't remember all of the exact makeup items I used, I still remember the types of colours I used.

The focus was on my eyes, but I tried to keep it soft as the wedding ceremony was during the day and I didn't want OTT eyes. I used a taupe coloured eyeshadow all over the lid, a darker e/s in the crease, lined the top lashline with black eyeliner and finished with lashings of mascara (Maybelline Full n Soft was my HD at the time).

For lips I only used Lancome Juicy Tubes in Pamplemousse (this was before I became lipstick obsessed!). I remember the colour, because I'd used up a tube already and had to ask someone to get it for me from duty free as that colour had sold our from the shops.

On cheeks I just used a soft pink blush.

On nails I did the usual pale pinky/cream colour.

When buying accessories, I chose styles that I would wear again. The earrings and bracelet in the pic below I got from Diva as they looked just as good as some of the costume jewellery sold at bridal shops (a.k.a. licenced to charge $$$$ because it's for a wedding). The necklace was a gift from my mother-in-law.

I got my hair done at a salon near our house but I didn't like the way they did my fringe so I re-did it. The flowers in my hair in the above pic are also from Diva.

And I can't do a wedding post without at least a mini-shot of the wedding dress, so here it is.

I hope you enjoyed this post. I love looking at pics from weddings, so if you're married and have a blog, I'd love you to do a post about your makeup on the day.

If you're not married, would you do your own makeup on your weddings day?

  1. Thank you so much for sharing these photos, you looked wonderful and the dress was amazing. Thanks also for sharing your cost saving tips, I'm sure many will find them useful. I totally agree that there's nothing wrong with doing your own makeup at your wedding. Catherine Middleton did a great job and so did you on your wedding day, there's no need to spend outrageous amounts of cash on things you can do yourself.

  5. You looked absolutely gorgeous on your wedding and I'm talking about in person. You were are stunning bride and your dress was gorgeous and flattering. I assumed you'd done your own makeup because you're so good at it why pay someone else to do it? I can see what you mean about your palette changing since then, a bit more coral and brighter colours seem to be your fav's now.

I got married 8 years ago now and I don't have any digital photos - I had a professional makeup artist do my hair and makeup but she's actually a good friend of mine so it worked well (she does makeup for tv etc).

  10. Wow you looked incredible!! Thanks for sharing the pics. I dunno if I would be game enough to do my own makeup for my wedding, although I did have it professionally done for my sisters and I wasn't all that happy with it so maybe I would haha have to wait and see I suppose :)

  13. You looked beautiful and I love your dress!

I actually really dislike having my makeup done because, like you said, no one knows your face like you do. I like to perfect my base more than anything but a lot of makeup artists speed through this step and go straight to eyes.

I would do my own wedding makeup but I think I'd most likely end up getting a MUA because it would just be an added stress on the day!

  15. Oh, I love looking at people's wedding photos! You look so beautiful, and your dress is stunning too!

I don't think I would do my makeup for my wedding (if/when it happens...). Let's just say I'm challenged when it comes to eyeliner haha.

  21. Thank you so much again for your lovely comments.

@Elly - I'm pretty sure it was Velvet by The Makeup Store. It's a greyer version of Satin Taupe.

  22. Stunning! You looked beautiful. :)

I don't see the problem with doing your own makeup for your wedding as long as you know what you're doing.

  23. You look so beautiful Lilit! ♥
And good on you for doing it yourself! :)
I loved my make up on my wedding day... Plus, it stayed put from 8am until 10pm! :)
I was not as brave as you though, I can do my everyday make up but I didn't trust myself to do my own wedding make up.

    xo

  28. Stunning !! I just read this post and I thought.. well I wouldn't mind doing my own makeup for my wedding day. And if I ever need to get it done professionally, I know who to turn to, so I'll see how I feel :) My mum did her own makeup, hair and flowers for her wedding. So it might just run in my family hahaha

Love how you got accessories from Diva and redo your hair hehe..

  29. I know I'm a bit late but I was just going through some old posts to cure a bit of boredom. I really wish I'd done my own makeup on my wedding day as I was really unhappy with what my makeup artist did but just couldn't be bothered taking it all off and starting again after how much it cost! I know I could have done a better job though and hate looking at my wedding photos because my makeup just makes me cranky!!
