Secret blogging business

When I first started my blog almost 8 months ago not many people in my life knew about it. Besides my husband, I pretty much kept it a secret from everyone.
The aqua polish on the left is the best ever... a post on it will come in the near future.

Why? It was really because of a fear of being judged for my obsession with what some may call frivolous and material things. I didn't want people to know that I went to 3 different countries and 6 different cities to track down the Naked Palette!

Then slowly slowly I decided to tell a few people here and there. Some people thought it's the coolest thing ever and are regular readers of my blog (hi guys, you know who you are!) Some just didn't care...

Then it dawned on me... my IQ doesn't decrease with every new lipstick purchase... my wallet, yes, my IQ I'm pretty sure is still intact. Except maybe when I get obsessed about a particular product and that's all I can think of until finally get them... yes Tipsy & Dollface, I am talking about you! Or when I start talking in legal-ese trying to justify why I got a Lover, Illamasqua Lover that is. I'm happily married thank you very much!

The point I'm trying to make is, that while I kept thinking that I have to keep my blog a secret because I'll be judged, thought of as materialistic or not smart enough, that wasn't the case at all. People are either going to think it's fabulous (and you're fabulous!) or just not care and that's just fine!

There are still people in my life that don't know I have a blog, but that's because I haven't seen the need to tell them, rather than being afraid to tell them.

So for all you bloggers out there - who knows about your blog?

  1. just went and read your post about the naked palette, had a good old chuckle! haha. loads of people seemed to struggle to find it but i found it straight away! must have got lucky. when i first started blogging i told a few of my friends mainly because i didn't think anyone else would read it! then when i got twitter i followed both bloggers and real life friends so the two just kinda intermixed. i'm not sure how many of my real friends definitely read it but i know some do.. i'm okay with that. no reason to hide it xx

  2. It's weird. I didn't want to keep it a secret I was concerned about how will people know about it. Of course I told my friends, family etc. But none of my close friends have a makeup obsession like I do. Twitter definitely helped and my FB beauty obsessed friends have joined.

  4. I am always boring my boyfriend with blog related stuff so he knew from day 1 LOL and I post links up on my facebook so pretty much all my friends etc know, they don't ask me about it or mention it though but they aren't really into make up and beauty,

Although I have been surprised on times when aquaintances or old work colleagues say things like 'where did you get that lipstick you put on your blog last week' etc

Your blog is fabulous so you should be very proud to shout it to the world LOL! x

  5. I'm actually just like you! I have 2 blogs now. One people know about, the other, pretty much only my boyfriend does. The readers I have are all people I've met through other blogs. You're not alone!

  6. Most of my family know, and one close friend, but I was too scared to tell everyone because there are just so many back-stabbing, judgmental girls at my school. Thanks for this post (:
    One day...

  10. Intresting topic. It took me about 6 months before I told my husband about my blog. And I think I've only told one other person besides him. I guess I've been keeping it a secret because I work in a male dominated industry and don't really want people to know about it because of my job. And my friends and family aren't into makeup like I am, so they would think I'm crazy! So I chose to keep it a secret and am fine with that!

  11. A few people know about my blog, my BF and my sister and a few classmates. I had the same fear as you did. Not just about blogging but about wanting to get more into makeup in general. I was afraid it made me vapid and etc etc. My boyfriend solved this for me. He said that if I was going to take my time in getting ready, i owed it to myself to use the best stuff possible. :D Guilt solved.

  12. Two of my friends know I blog, but they don't really care, and none of my family knows about it. So virtually no one, really. I totally get what you mean, though, I just know that people will judge me for being materialistic. :(

  13. This is such a great post :) i know exactly what you mean. When i first started out with my blog i didn't tell anyone. Now almost everyone in my year at school knows. I originally only told one friend, but she thought it would be cool to show her entire class and before i knew it, lots of people were asking me about it. My boyfriend and family know now too :) to be honest i don't really mind. Some people think its cool, some people dont care. But i love blogging and thats all that matters! xx

  14. this is a really interesting post-i didn't tell people at the beginning, and i think a lot of people didn't think it was very cool or exciting. now, i feel a little bit better about telling people, but i still wait until i know them fairly well. :)

  16. I also felt like I would be judged for being superficial and only caring about my appearance so I did kind of tried to keep my blog a well kept secret for a while - but now I just feel sorry for the people who don't realize that I am so much more than just my beauty blog.

The fact that I love all things make up related does not make me a "bad person" and it sure as hell doesn't mean that I don't have other interests as well.
I know that my readers see the person behind my beauty blog and I really don't care about what everyone else thinks about me.
I pity them if they judge me. ;)

Love your blog, by the way!

  18. Thank you for your comments everyone, so refreshing to see that a lot of you are not hiding your blogs. There's nothing to hide! And those of you that are still feeling like I felt in the beginning and have the need to hide it, hopefully one day you'll be able to tell everyone you have a blog and feel proud over it.

  19. My boyfriend knows and now most of my family knows but i haven't told any of my friends yet. Just don't think they would really be interested..

  20. I post my blog to facebook so most of my friends know about it. Even my dad reads it!! Most of my close friends aren't at all interested, and thats fine, but there are some people on facebook who I literally havent seen since high school who are avid readers. They'll ask me for advice on a product or just comment on facebook when they like a link, so thats really cool!

  21. I know what you mean, my boyfriend and parents know about it and a couple of friends but that's it really. Someone from real life seen my blog on twitter and mentioned it in front of about 12 of my closest friends. I was so embarrassed. Not that I'm ashamed of it, but I don't want people think I love myself really. I so don't though, I just love make up and always have done xxx

  22. I'm the same! My boyfriend & parents know, but only one of my friends knows! & that's only because she is on YT and makes videos herself! It's like a double life haha :)

  23. I am actually working on a post similar to this! Since you posted first, I will be sure to link to you- maybe make mine a longer, more thoughtful response? Let me know what you think. In short, only my boyfriend and best friend know. I am a PhD student studying gender and feminist theory, so I work in fields that are critical of the beauty industry. I am critical too, but I also have a great appreciation clearly. I have some of the same fears you did. Can't wait to think more about this!

  24. @Krystal - that sounds great hun, I'd love to see a more in depth write up of this topic as it's something close to a lot of bloggers' hearts!

  25. This is probably one of the few times that I've read through all the comments on a post. Very interesting.
Only my boyfriend and my mom know about my blog. The reason is, blogging is something that really relaxes me. I only do it when I feel like doing it, and I want to be able to write anything I want! If my family or friends were reading, I know I'd be a little more conscious about what I write, and I don't want that to happen :)

  26. My 2 bffs know about and read my blog, and one of them started a blog because I harassed her to :) A few other friends know about it because I either casually mentioned it, or they stalked it down from my twitter profile XD

Admittedly I am a bit apprehensive when telling people about my blog, or even about my makeup hobby. I worry that they're going to think it's stupid or that I'm shallow, but they understand when I say something like 'everyone has their hobby, this is mine.' After that they tend to ask me for makeup advice and recommendations on products!

  27. The only person who knows about my blog is my brother, not because I told him but because he searched the history... lol!
