Maybelline Mascaras - Great Lash LOL and One by One Volum' Express

I have two quick Maybelline Mascara reviews for you today - Great Lash LOL (that's Lot of Lashes, not Laugh Out Loud!), and One By One Volum' Express, both in blackest black.

Before I get to the review, here's how my lashes look without any mascara. They're relatively thick, have a curl, but are not overly long.

Maybelline Great Lash - Lots of Lashes
Apparently the original Great Lash is one of Maybelline's most popular mascaras, but to tell you the truth I wasn't that impressed with the original one when I tried it years and years ago. I felt that it was too wet and made my lashes clump together. This however, yes please!
  • The wand design is very interesting, the narrow tip making it easy to get to the outer corner lashes I otherwise miss with a normal brush.
  • The formula was still a tad wet, but after 3 or so days it thickened up and holds onto lashes beautifully.
  • I feel it gives great length, and thickens somewhat as well.
  • With 2 coats it made my lashes clump together, but I was able to separate it with the third coat by wiggling the wand in between the clumped lashes.

Maybelline One By One Volum' Express
I've been a fan of the original Volum' Express mascaras so I was very excited to try this one, in fact more excited than LOL. But... hmmm...
  • I was impressed with the length it gave my lashes, even with just one coat, but instead of giving my lashes volume and thickness this clumped them together and made it difficult to separate.
  • It also left my lashes looking a bit spiky on the ends, and left them feeling crunchy.
  • I found it difficult to get to the outer corner lashes without smudging because the wand was too thick for it.
  • Overall I prefer the original Volum' Express, the ones in the blue tube.

Final thoughts
The best way I've found to way these mascaras is by layering them over each other. I use One by One first to get length, then I use LOL to add thickness and give the corner lashes a nice coating. Together they work absolutely beautifully at giving me thick and long lashes.

I pretty much only ever use drugstore mascaras as I don't believe in paying upwards of $50AUD for brand name mascaras which will only last me 3 months max. So I'm glad to have found Great Lash LOL as I can add it to my list of other drugstore mascaras I frequently buy (the others are Covergirl Lashblast, Max Factor False Lash Effect, and Maybelline The Falsies).

Have you tried either of these mascaras? What's your favourite drugstore mascara?

  1. wow! Both of the mascaras make your lashes look very pretty. Thanks for the short review.
I haven´t used these Maybelline mascaras, but my current favourite drugstore mascaras are Maybelline Cat Eyes and Maybelline the Falsies Flared mascara.

    1. I haven't tried them yet babe, every time I go to my local Target the Essence counter is pretty bare! When I see it I will try it as I've seen how awesome it looks on you!

  4. I'm a slave to Covergirl LashBlast mascaras, I have been for years now. Part of me wants to branch out and try other mascaras, and part of me doesn't want to because I know I love those are there is so much else I want!

  5. It's hard to believe that Great Lash (the original) is one of their best sellers...I wasn't impressed with it either! But having heard your positive review on the LOL one and how amazing it makes your lashes look, i will definitely have to check it out!
As for the one by the one, it's one of my all time favourite mascaras. It's a shame you didn't like it as much :(
Yay for finding someone who also layers their mascara! My friends laugh at me for using two different mascaras but it really works and makes your lashes look so much better. Great reviews Lilit :) xoxo

  8. You have gorgeous lashes! The LOL looks good I might try that out. I have One by One and I wasn't overly impressed by it, it just wasn't as good as some other mascaras in my collection!

  9. I agree- I was underwhelmed by the original Great Lash back in high school, it did nothing for me!

I used to layer Sky High Curves then the original Volum' Express. You can actually still get them in some 'GLoss' stores, but I'm not sure how old they'd be, or if they're U.S. stock. I got an original VE a month or two back and it seems to be fine.

I then moved on to this one, http://www.drugstore.com/maybelline-volum-express-turbo-boost-mascara-waterproof-very-black-261/qxp168358 the VE Turbo Boost, which remained my favourite, but is hard to find now except in some Duty Free stores.

As a replacement, I tried Colossal, and while I like it I still think the Turbo Boost is better. So again, I layer them until I get the effect I want :)

  10. I don't have any mascaras from Maybelline yet. I want to finish the ones I have from AVON before buying another mascara x_x

As I can see, the LOL one looks way better *-* But One by One gives more lenght, so... well it's like you do: use them together ^_^ I would like a mascara to curl lashes, mine are pretty hard to curl >_<

  11. Great post! I LOVEE the one-by-one mascara. So perfect for everyday.
Does the LOL smudge and give you panda eyes? That's what I'm afraid of :(

anyway, great comparison :) tempted to give the LOL a go.

    1. It doesn't smudge for me or give panda eyes. It's still a bit crunchy on the lashes but not like One by One.

  12. One by One is my all-time favorite mascara! I really only have the patience for one coat, so that's perhaps why it works best for me! It also does not smudge, flake, or move at all, even when I rub my eyes, which is critical, since I can't keep my hands away from my face :)

  13. I really like One by One, probably my favourite Maybelline mascara I have tried recently. I didn't like The Falsies and I hate Great Lash (the original). I would like to try Turbo Boost again, that was an old favourite, plus I think Full N' Soft is a lovely daytime mascara. No crunchy lashes!

My fave drugstore mascara is L'oreal Voluminous original - fantastic volume and length. It is a shame that is so hard to find in Australia!

    1. I love the original Voluminous too, and occasionally I'll find it at a discount store in Sydney but it's so annoying it's not available more widely here! Oh and I love Full N'Soft, definitely great at avoiding the crunchy-lash.

  14. When I saw "Great Lash LOL" I automatically thought that the product was so bad, that it was a joke. haha! I remember wearing Great Lash when I was younger. It was most likely my first mascara, and I just thought the little tiny wand sucked! The LOL wand looks pretty cool and your lashes look awesome with it! I think I'm actually going to give it a try.

TY for the awesome review! Your pictures were VERY helpful! :)

    1. I think original Great Lash was everyone's first mascara! LOL. We were too young too know any better. I do prefer this new version's wand though which alone makes it work the spend. xo

  15. Your natural lashes are beautiful but I love the effect both these have on you. I have only layered mascaras once, accidentally and I loved the results. I wonder why I haven't done it again? <3 Anyway - great review!

  16. I really like Maybelline mascaras, though I never got into the original Great Lash. Full 'N Soft was a fave of mine years back, though I don't use it anymore. The wand on Lots of Lashes is fairly unique, I think it's really effective on your lashes (that are naturally so full and long anyway!). I'm currently using Volum' Express Cat Eyes, the wand is great for getting to those outward lashes. Define-A-Lash works pretty well too.

  18. I haven't tried the Great Lash before, but I have the One By One...it's not my fave. It's a bit too wet and smells horrid. It does add nice volume for one coat though so it comes in handy when I'm lazy :)

  19. Thanks for the review. Been captivated by LOL's unique looking wand. The results look pretty good. Really luscious looking lashes there.
