Eyeshadow "helpers"

I generally don't like a lot of fuss when it comes to make up and skincare. For example I hardly ever use primers, I just think it's an extra step in my beauty routine that I don't need. But.... lately I've been loving using these 3 things I like to call eyeshadow helpers. Why? Because they really enhance the colour of my shadows and make them last longer. What are they? Two are jumbo pencils, and the other is a cream eyeshadow pot, and all are drugstore products.

1. Maybelline Color Tattoo Metal eyeshadow in Barely Branded - As this has a metallic base I use this with eyeshadows that have some shimmer to them.

2. Models Prefer Shadow Pencil in Down To Earth - I mainly use these under taupe/brown colours to take them from boring to multi-dimensional.

3. NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk - I tend to use this with matte shades that need help to show up on the lid although it looks great with shimmery colours too.

I don't use them with every eyeshadow, only ones that need a little bit of help to pop. Here are 3 eyeshadows that I think need that little bit of help, and how they look with and without "helpers".  The eyeshadows are Rimmel Tribute, Maybelline Eyestudio in Navy Narcissist and Maybelline Eyestudio in Clover Couture. For the swatches below I used the darker shades of the Maybelline Eyestudios.

What do you think? Big difference huh? Do you use bases underneath your eyeshadows?

  1. Wow the difference is amazing. Just goes to show that primers can be a good thing! I generally use UD eyeshadow primers or MAC paint pots. I really want to try the NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk though. Such a raved about product.

  2. I like to use cream eye shadows as a base, and sometimes to add warmth to some eye shadows, and I tried NYX Milk. How I hated it!! LOL! It slid everywhere, didn't stay on my lids, and just made a mess out of everything. I just use a white eye pencil by MAC and that worked much better :-P

  3. Wow this looks so good. I do use eye primers as I have horrible eye lids, but have never tried this whole layering technique. Will definitely give this a go.
