Models Prefer Soft Touch Mineral Powders - possible dupes for The Hourglass Ambient powders?

I've tried quite a few things from the Models Prefer range (available from Priceline) over the last few years. I've found that their powder products, e.g. blushes, eyeshadows, have all been amazing despite the cheap price tag. The lip and nail products haven't really done it for me (they have a smell I've found off-putting), but powders I've had no problems recommending to anyone and buying them myself. So when the other day I noticed they had new powders out, which suspiciously could pass off as dupes for the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders, I knew I had to give them a try!

L/R: Luminous Glow, Soft Focus

There were 4 shades in total, but the ones that appealed to me were Luminous Glow ( soft golden glow) and Soft Focus (a champagne glow). After wearing them everyday for the past week or so, here's what I think of them.

These are finishing powders. What this means is you apply it after you've finished all your other face makeup, and it gives your face a luminous glow. It takes away any cakiness and powderiness that your usual base might leave behind.

Soft Focus is slightly too light for me at the moment, so I've only been wearing Luminous Glow. Both are however very finely milled, they leave absolutely no cakiness behind and really give a soft natural glow to the face. I have fairly dry skin and this has been great at letting me fake that natural glow that I was not born with!
Wearing Luminous Glow over my usual base
The glow does not last though, this isn't something I can apply in the morning and have a glowing complexion at the end of the day. Nope, it lasts at best till lunch time. But you know what, these cost a quarter of the price of the Hourglass powders and even that expensive one lasted only a couple of hours on me.

Here's how they look swatched. Left is Luminous Glow, and right is Soft Focus.

And remember I mentioned these are possibly dupes for the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders? Well, I so happen to own the colour Luminous Light, and swatched side by side with Soft Focus they're almost identical! Not just in colour, but in texture as well. Left is Models Prefer Soft Focus, right is Hourglass Luminous Light.

On the whole I'd say these are great powders if you're looking for something to give you a natural glow and don't mind that extra step of applying it after your usual base. It's not a must have, but then I also don't think the Hourglass powders are must haves. And for a nice-to-have product I'd rather spend $16.95 like for the MP one, than $62 which is what the Hourglass one costs here in Australia.

What do you think of these types of finishing powders? Must have or not?

  1. Wow, these sound so similar! I'm definitely tempted to give these a go because of how much love the Hourglass ones get. I don't think I'd ever splurge on those though because I'm not sure they'd work well with my skin type. All the more reason to try the MP ones!

    1. These are a great way to get into the "finishing powder" trend as they're so affordable yet so similar in quality to the expensive ones.

  4. I was so tempted to pick these up at the 40% sale, I'm kicking myself now that I didn't! I already have two of the Hourglass powders though so I guess I don't really need them. But I want them! #beautyaddict! xx

    1. Soft focus is so lovely, I imagine I'll be using that colour a lot in winter when my skin is lighter but right now the Luminous Light one is what I'm using most. I feel like I need to buy more colours! LOL

  7. What do you apply these with ? I bought the luminous glow one and it doesn't seem to apply with a large fluffy blush brush ..

    1. I'm using a really dense face powder brush for it, it's the Nude by Nature Mineral Powder brush and it works great!

  8. I vibe been looking for a powder to give my face a nice glow without looking glittery so I am definitely purchasing this, was just wondering which shade you would recommend for highlighting and for putting lightly all over the face as I have medium/tan skin.
