Currently in Rotation: Mascaras

I don't often have this many mascaras in rotation all the time, usually only 2, max 3. But then I got sent one as a press sample and another was a magazine freebie so now I have 5 in rotation. So many choices! #firstworldproblems. Here's a quick rundown on them all.

Revlon CustomEyes
I love this one, but I have a feeling it's discontinued. I can only get it from discount cosmetics stores at heavily reduced prices. It's got one of those dial-system wands where you choose whether you want a natural look or a more volumised look but to be quite honest I can't see a difference. Instead what I get is a consistently volumised look with no clumps. For as long as I can find this in stores, I'll keep purchasing it.

Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express
This is one mascara I keep repurchasing. Not because I'm in love with it, but because it's a reliable one and I always get decent volume with it. The wand is quite big, so if I'm in a rush I tend to smudge it all over my lids and then swear I'll never buy this again. But when I'm in need of a mascara with no idea what to buy I always just gravitate towards this as I know it performs.

Max Factor Masterpiece Transform
This was a magazine freebie and I was really wowed by it. It's got one of those skinny rubbery wands which makes it easy to get to the tiniest of lashes. It gives volume, lift, and best of all does not make my lashes crunchy. But... as much as I love Max Factor mascaras (False Lash is a favourite), they're just too expensive for a drugstore brand.

essence Lash Princess
Well this was a pleasant surprise. It was a press sample and while I had tried essence products before and liked them, I didn't expect this mascara to be so good! It's only like $6 or something ridiculous like it. It's got a curved wand which is meant to give lift, curl and volume and I'll say it works. This is one of those mascaras that you might not like when you first use it, but it needs drying time, so come back to it after a week and you'll love it. I do.

L'Oreal False Lash Wings Butterfly
I'd heard sooooo many good things about this so I had to get it. And look, the effect it gives is fantastic. It lifts, separates, volumises,  and the pointed tip of the wand makes it easy to get to those pesky corner lashes. Where this falls down for me is how it makes my lashes feel afterwards. It leaves them crunchy and dry, a feeling I hate, and for that reason alone I won't repurchase. It's a bit like the Benefit They're Real mascara, fabulous at making lashes look va va boom but horrible at how drying it gets.

My favourite of the lot is definitely the essence Lash Princess mascara. It gives just the right amount of volume, curl and definition to make me put this in a to-be-repurchased pile.

Have you tried any of these mascaras? Any favourites?

  1. I love when a budget friendly brand out-does the more expensive ones. I've not tried any of these, but have been pleasantly surprised by essence mascaras in the past, I'll try and pick this one up next time :)

    1. I'm very surprised by the essence mascara as well, it's only a few dollars yet performs better than all the others mentioned in my post :)

  2. Really wanna try the Essence mascara now. I love the Loreal Mascara, its so good. The only negative I find with it i, it tends to flake on me sometimes.

    1. Yep, I love the effect of the Loreal one too but hate the flakiness and the crunchy way it coats my lashes.

  3. I have rarely been disappointed with an Essence mascara. I always recommend them to people. I've never been a fan of Revlon- for me they make some awesome products but mascara is not one of them. I have got way too many mascaras on rotation too. I am trying to use up a few before I purchase any more.
