Acing the Base - my current favourite products for a flawless face

Sometimes we focus so much on colour cosmetics that we forget about the base. Base face products that is. I think getting your base right is very important, because even the most beautiful eye or lip makeup will not stand out against a backdrop of mismatched, patchy or just plain horrible foundation.

Each person I'm sure has their own favourite products to achieve a flawless base, and here are my go to products for creating a flawless complexion and the order in which I use them.

1. (optional) Primer:
I say optional, because up until I managed to repurchase my Girlee Velvet Veil Primer I did not use one. This however is just perfect. Makes my skin velvety soft to touch, makes foundation apply smoother and last all day. I don't think it's a must have, as I don't use it every day, but if you're looking for a great mattifying primer then this is it.

2. Concealer:
There are a lot of strong views out there whether concealer goes over foundation or under? It's the chicken and the egg story isn't it? I say, who cares, do what feels right for you. For me personally I prefer concealer to go under my foundation. I feel that I use less foundation that way as a concealer will hide a lot of imperfections before I even reach for a foundation. At the moment I'm using Girlee Cosmetics Advanced Longwear concealer (reviewed HERE), but my absolute favourite is Maybelline Instant Age Rewind which I reviewed HERE before.

3. Foundation:
I generally have a few foundations on the go, but one that I always come back to for a flawless base has to be my Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse foundation. It gives beautiful velvety smooth coverage, that lasts all day. Some other favourites are MAC Studio Sculpt and Maybelline Dream Liquid foundation.

4. Powder:
I always, always set my foundation with powder. It's the only way I can get my base to stay flawless all day. I have 2 on the go, and that's because each provides a different type of coverage. For full coverage that's also matte I'm loving Maybelline 24hr Superstay Powder (OMG with all this Maybelline talk you'd think this post was sponsored by them, but it's not! And all the products I'm mentioning here are bought with my own money, so not even PR samples here). If I'm after a more luminous finish then I love MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural.

5. Contour product:
Contouring has become a part of my everyday beauty routine. I do it without even thinking about it, to me it comes as naturally as powdering my face. Click HERE to see my everyday contouring routine. My favourite product at the moment is the Illamasqua Sculpting Duo, but prior to this I used the Benefit Hoola bronzer which lasted me a whopping 3 years. Once I finish this one I'll probably go back to Hoola, as it's much better value for money plus the shade is perfect for my skin tone. The Illamasqua Duo also comes with a highlighter but I don't use it too often.

6. Honorable mention: Lip Balm
Technically not a base product, however this is something that I apply at the same time as my base. I'm loving the Carmex Original Formula pot which I apply probably after Step 1 above, and let it all soak in nicely while I get the rest of my face done. That preps my lips for those matte lippies that I love so much.

Here are some closeups and swatches of the products, as well as a quick FOTD using the main product mentioned here.

EYES: Laura Mercier Luxe Colour Wardrobe palette. CHEEKS: Illamasqua Hussy. LIPS: L'Oreal Matte lipstick in Glamour Fuchsia

There you have it, my favourite base products. Have you tried any of them? What are your favourites?
