Makeup geek eyeshadows: Review & Swatches

If you like watching beauty gurus on YouTube then chances are you know of Makeup Geek, a.k.a. Marlena. Marlena has created her own line of makeup and after seeing some beautiful swatches of her eyeshadows on various blogs I decided to try them out myself. They are US $5.99 each in pan form, or US $7.99 in a compact.

I bought 8 eyeshadows in pan form to put in my beautiful new Z Palette, and MUG were kind enough to include a freebie as well. So today I'm swatching 9 of the eyeshadows from the over 60 sold at the MakeupGeek store. As you can see I mainly bought neutral shades, with a couple of brights thrown in. I chose all matte shades as most of my mattes are quite chalky, and these appeared to be soft and pigmented. And they are. I am not disappointed!

Vanilla Bean - sheer creamy beige, great for brow bone
Creme Brûlée - matte medium sand colour, great for blending out harsh lines
Latte -matte medium brown, great for daytime smokey eye and deepening the crease
Frappe - matte mid tone brown, great daytime crease shade, warmer than Latte
Cocoa Bear - matte deep reddish brown
Country Girl - shimmery deep brown with pink undertones (this one was included as a freebie)
Unexpected - matte pale pink brown
Fairytale - matte greyed out purple
Sea Mist - shimmery deep turquoise, leans towards emerald

Lets have a look at some swatches shall we?

Overall, I'm very happy with these eyeshadows and I'll most likely go back to get more. They are very pigmented, buttery soft and blend like a dream. They are of very high quality and compare to the likes of MAC and Illamasqua but at a fraction of the price. Highly recommended!

Have you tried any Makeup Geek eyeshadows?
What do you think of these?

  1. I ordered some ZPalettes and two eye shadows from Makeup Geek - one of them Latte! Pleased to read your review - now I can't wait for my order to arrive and finish my palette project.

    1. Latte is gorgeous! But then so are the other shades too. You won't be disappointed! What was the other shade you got?

    2. Purely Naked was the other shade. I bought the same aqua/yellow ZPalette and they had a large Zpalette on special for only $1 more in Dark Raspberry Damask so I bought that too for blushers etc.

  5. Oh, nice! I like Frappe, Cocoa Bear and Unexpected! And while Fairytale isn't something I'd wear, I think it's absolutely beautiful.

I'd love to see a FOTD/EOTD with these. Pleaaase. :D

    1. Fairlytale appears less purple and more greyed mauve on my lids, I've been wearing it a lot and i really think you could wear it too... especially with all those purple lippies that you adore! Oh and yes, FOTD/EOTD will be coming shortly :)

  8. How do they compare in size with the MAC pans? Are they about the same? I've seen everyone rave about these shadows and really want to try them out for myself.

    1. They're the exact same size as the MAC pans, but much cheaper and really really good quality. I'd go as far as to say the matte shades of MUG are better than the MAC mattes. :)
