Love it, Leave it - Rimmel vs Revlon gel eyeliners

A quickie for you today... I'm comparing two very similar gel eyeliners, one I love, the other I'll leave. Both come in similar packaging, a pot with a brush under the lid. My comments are purely based on the formula of the eyeliner, and not the packaging which some love, some don't. Personally, I don't mind.

Rimmel Waterproof Gel eyeliner in Black - RRP $12.95
I got this for half price at the Chemist Warehouse sale and even full price it would definitely be worth it.  Colour pay off is great, it's an intense dark black. One dip of the brush in the pot is enough to line the whole eye. And best of all it lasts the whole day without smudging.
Verdict: Love it.

Revlon Colorstay Gel eyeliner in Black - RRP $24.95
I picked this up from Priceline when they were having that 40% off sale and let me tell you, I'm not impressed. If I'd paid full price I'd be pretty disappointed. In fact I am disappointed. The pigmentation is very weak, I need to dip the brush into the pot several times to get any colour pay off, and it feels very dry when I apply it.
Verdict: Leave it.

Both eyeliners applied with one dip of the brush - as you can see the Revlon one has very weak pigmentation. PS: excuse the super dry hands, that's what happens when it's cold out and you don't apply hand cream.

Have you tried any of these eyeliners? What are your thoughts?

  2. Oh it is quite surprising Revlon one is so disappointing. Great comparison! xx

    1. I know, Revlon is generally a great brand but they didn't do too well with this particular product.

    1. So disappointing isn't it? I expect a lot more from the Revlon... oh well, at least I'm happy with my Rimmel liner :)

  5. I haven't tried either but may give the Rimmel a go now that you have mentioned it here. I love the Face of Australia budge proof liners for a crazy cheap perfect gel eyeliner similar to these.

    1. I really wanted to try the FOA one actually, but my local priceline had sold out :(
Next time I'm in the market for one I'll be hunting the FOA one down!

    1. Price doesn't necessarily mean quality and this just proves it :)

  7. I almost picked up the Revlon one a month ago because I wanted to try a gel liner, instead I opted for a liquid one. I know see it was the right decision lol. Next time I get the urge to try a gel liner, I'll go pick up the Rimmel one. Thanks for the review!

    1. Good decision Melli! It's really not pigmented enough which defeats the purpose of having a gel eyeliner as they're meant to be much more pigmented than liquids/pencis.

    1. Glad I helped, and I hope you like the Rimmel one as it's definitely the better of the two in my opinion :)

  9. The Rimmel liner is definitely my go to - I'm on my third or fourth pot of the stuff! I don't think I've tried the Revlon but I have used Loreal's offering and it was nothing to write home about either. Just can't beat the intensity of the Rimmel one.

  14. I have tried both and I prefer the revlon one because the color is buildable and it sets. It doesnt smudge. I had a bad experience with the rimmel one as it smudged all over my lids. I dont know if i got a bad item but i also tried swatching it on my hand to test for "setting time". 15 minutes and it was still wet. Aint nobody got time fo that! Lol
