Haircut update... and a bit of a rant

Today was haircut day. I went to a new salon I'd never been to before (as my usual hairdresser had closed up shop), and based on online reviews it looked like a good place to go. Unfortunately I won't be going back. Don't get me wrong, my haircut is not horrible, but it's not what I was after.

As you might remember I was after an angled bob with blunt ends. I took pictures with me to show exactly what I was after. I kept reiterating that I wanted the back shorter than the front as I wanted that graduated look. I kept reiterating that I wanted the ends quite sharp and blunt. Instead I ended up with a straight bob, with soft ends.

My new haircut - nice, but not what I asked for
When it comes to hairdressers I don't usually speak up even if I don't like the cut. Not this time, this time I told the hairdresser THREE times to re-cut the back and make it shorter. THREE times he cut it (or did he?) but still somehow I ended up with a bob that's the same length all over. And everytime I asked him to cut the back shorter he kept saying but it's nicer this way. Ummm excuse me, isn't it MY hair? Shouldn't I say what I want? Does this look like an angled bob to you?
You'll have to excuse the iPhone/Instagram pics. I'll post proper pics after I've played around with this new hair more, maybe even curled it.

In the end I just had to leave because it was evident I wasn't going to get what I wanted, and by then I'd been there for 2 hours already (yes, 2 hours for a shampoo/cut/blowdry). To the hairdresser's credit he offered for me to go back there again so he could fix it. But seriously, I just can't be bothered. So looks like the search for a good hairdresser continues.

PS: I'm not naming the salon on my blog, but rest assured my review is posted amongst the other online reviews of this place so other would-be customers can see.

Go on, make me feel better, please tell me about your hairdresser horror stories.

  1. I had blonde tips done once, with a tip cap. That had a massive split in it. Big blonde patches all over the top of my head. Had to walk around with it like that for two days because they couldn't fix it until my hair "settled".

I like your cut, even though what you wanted is also gorgeous. Hopefully you can work with it and make it something you also like. Or find another hairdresser to fix it...? Xx

    1. Oh no that sounds horrible, the blonde patches. And 2 days is a long time, I'd probably lock myself in my bedroom until the 2 days is up!

Well I'm booked in to see my mum's hairdresser this afternoon to get the back re-shaped a bit to make it more angled. I'm hoping she won't botch things up. Even though this haircut isn't horrible, since it's not what I wanted my heart is just not in it.

  2. For what its worth Lilit, your hair looks absolutely stunning! I really do love it. But I also understand your frustration. I've avoided hairdressers for so long, and for as long as I can (hence my ridiculously long hair), because I can never get what I ask for.

I am always told "oh, I can try recreate what you want, but it wont look right on you", or they will do what I ask and its never right. In the end, a friend sent me a video on how to cut your own hair which led me to others and in the end I took the plunge and did it myself lol! I loved how it turned out. Who knows if I'll keep doing it, but I'mm happy for now.

PS - you always look stunning! ;)

    1. If I wasn't too scared I'd cut my own hair too, but I'm afraid I'll botch things up. You've been doing a great job with your haircuts as your hair always looks fab! xo

  3. You look lovely Lilit. However, if it is not what you requested, then that is just rant-worthy!!!! I have yet to find a good hairdresser in Melbourne - the last one I went to...well, I asked for a trim and she basically hacked a LOT off my hair!!! *cries* It has now grown...but it's just not the same :(

    1. Aww thanks hun, thanks for allowing me the rant :)
And your hair is great now, so hopefully you've forgotten the bad hack job from before. xx

  4. I do think your new style is really nice, but the hairdresser should have given you want you asked for! One of my worst experiences at the hairdresser was when my hair was being blowdried and the hairdryer was far too close to my scalp, I was flinching with the pain! Looking back I don't know why I didn't say something! X

    1. Oh I've had that happen to me too, my scalp has burned and my hair sizzled yet I've just grinned and beared it. Why oh why are we so speechless when it comes to hairdressers?

  5. Oh, I have a terrible hairdresser experience to share! This guy was so full of himself and kept chatting with the rest female hairdressers, while he left me with a moisturising mask on my hair for half an hour- mind you, my hair is oily, not dry... And to make matters worse, I asked him to cut me a fringe. Four times and he didn't answer, the last time he replied bluntly "I could do that, but will you be able to style it?" COME OOOON, seriously??? Needless to say, I didn't go back to his salon :/

    1. Oh that is so RUDE!!!! What makes him think you'll be unable to style it? So arrogant. I'm not surprised you didn't go back!

  6. As a cosmetologist I understand. I have finicky hair, which does not help any. It's 3a curly, graying, colored, frizzy, and I have had problems finding shampoo that won't dry my scalp. I have been going to the same hairstylist for more than ten years now. I trust her, and she understands me and my hair. All I can say is once you find another good one stick with them. Your hair does look lovely though.

  8. Your haircut looks good but I completely understand the frustration of not ending up with what you wanted. You did everything you could - pics, talking to him abt what you wanted, asking him to re-cut as you weren't happy with the final look.

My worst haircut was several years ago - I was in the process of growing out a very short, razored cut. The front sides had finally grown enough to reach my chin. I asked for the ends to be cleaned up & explained that I had been growing my hair out for some time. I have very poor eyesight & wear glasses. I obviously take them off when my hair is being cut. It took quite awhile to not freak out if something didn't feel quite right as my hair was being cut because I couldn't see what was happening in the mirror! Over the years I learned to relax as 9.5 times out of 10 - I ended up with what I had asked for.

The phrase that made me freeze in my chair was hearing the stylist say under her breath "Hmm, I'm not sure where this haircut is headed" as she is cutting the hair around my face. I ventured a hand up & the front pieces that had reached my chin now reached only where the earpieces of my glasses would be. And there were noticeable chunks in the back - no nice clean up of the ends as requested.
Needless to say I expressed my displeasure on the spot and called and talked to a mgr the next. She offered to have me come in at least let a more experienced stylist look at to see if there was anything that could be done. She at least was able to blend the back for me so it didn't look like I had tried to cut it with safety scissors.

And then the hunt for a new stylist began, again!
Hang in there - even though you don't have the cut you wanted you still look great! And there is still hair that can be cut off rather than having to wait for it to grow out as you can't glue hair back on once it has been cut!

    1. Oh that is so horrible, that would have traumatised me forever! I can't really relax at a hairdresser's chair either. I just sit there watching like a hawk to make sure they;re not cutting off more than I asked them. Unfortunately this particular hairdresser hardly cut anything at all! And you're right, at least I can go back and get more taken off as if it was the other way around I'd have to wait around for ages for it to grow.

  9. This happened when I was a kid, but it still traumatised me...

My mom took me to get my haircut at JC Penney (an American department store); I had really long hair and the goal was to get a trim. My usual stylist was on leave, so they put me with this new lady. Over an hour later, I was finally out of the chair.

Later that day I went swimming, when I came back my mom had this look of horror on her face. The hairdresser cut my hair unevenly ( it was shorter on one side); to hide her mistakes, she curled my hair under, because she was too ashamed to admit she had botched the cut. Thankfully my mom was able to fix it -- instead of getting a trim, I think I lost 4 inches of hair.

Needless to say we never went back to that particular hairdresser again.

    1. So many horror hairdresser stories here today! I can just imagine how upset you would have been as a kid having to lose 4 inches of hair when all you wanted was a little trim. Hopefully you've found a good hairdresser now!

  10. Unfortunately I can't make you feel better as my bestie is my hairdresser, and typically I just tell her to do whatever she wants...

I'm sad that the hairdresser wouldn't listen to you. I could understand him saying (like many have said to me) "Once I cut it off I can't glue it back on", but once you say you want it chopped, they should chop. End. Of. Story. xxx

  11. I adore your cut! It makes me so mad when hairdressers don't do what is asked, especially since it's not their hair. There are 2 times that I can remember being almost in tears. 1 was when I asked for long layers, to add shape to my medium length hair, and ended up with a semi mullet. Another was with a colourist when I wanted a few purple peek-a-boo highlights. She should have told me that she couldn't do it because I ended up having to go to her 3 times, ended up with various colours (orange, purple, pink, red, black, brown, blonde) and then had to go elsewhere to get the colour stripped entirely from my hair. Needless to say, I haven't coloured my hair in well over a year because now I'm terrified. Feel better? lol xo.

    1. Oh you have some horror stories there! A mullet would have been HORRIBLE, that would have annoyed me so much. And the colour issue sounds like a disaster! Yep, thank you, feeling better now lol xo

  12. I still like your haircut, even if it's not exactly what you wanted! My hairdresser horror story is from back when I had bright pink streaks. I went to get the roots of the streaks bleached (not coloured, I do the colour at home with my own dye). I told the girl very clearly that I just wanted the streaks touched up, and she proceeded to bleach my ENTIRE HEAD. I was stupid though, I didn't notice what she was doing until it was too late and she'd already done half my hair. She then went on her hour long lunch break while the bleach was developing, so my head was burning and I couldn't get anyone's attention to wash it out. Afterwards, I had to walk through the shopping centre with an entire head of bleached white hair. I decided to never trust cheap chain budget brand hairdressers ever again.

    1. Oh you poor thing, I can just imagine the burning pain you must have felt. Seriously don't they take any safety lessons first? Bleaches burn! Yeah sometimes there's a reason that some salons charge a lot, you are paying for their expertise and experience. Although that said the salon that botched up my hair charged quite a lot so clearly price didn't mean expertise at all in this case.

  13. I have had a curly graduated bob (Pob!) for years now, although just changed to a new style. My hairdresser is awesome if you would like her details but she is in Artarmon so that might be too much of a hike for you?

My worst haircut was thanks to mum though it was my own fault. When i was in primary school I had a fringe. I was sick of having to get mum to cut it so often so asked her to cut it short...and she did exactly what i asked. She must have cut it so it was only 2cm long, but its curly so it prob bounced back to being about 1cm long. I pulled on it and pulled on it to try and speed up the growing process (it was school hols and school was due back the next day). No surprises, that didnt make my hair grow faster!

    1. Yeah Artarmon is definitely too far for me now, what with a little dragon and all.
LOL, i love it, super curly hair with a short fringe, that would have been a sight to see! Well the main thing is you have a good hairdresser now and don't have to rely on your mum for trims :)

  14. Oh no! I hate when hairdressers don't listen and demand what they think is better.

I had a similar-ish experience. I had grown out my hair which took ages. I asked the hairdresser for a straight-across fringe that was LIGHT and I asked that the back of my hair be cut straight across, left quite full and NOT in a 'v' shape.

I repeated all this while she was cutting multiple times.

In the end the hairdresser gave me a really full heavy straight fringe and the back was cut in a 'v' shape and really thinned out. *sigh*

    1. I absolutely hate when they thin out hair, seriously who wants thinned hair? And clearly when you said NO V shape they heard the "v shape" part but not the NO part.

      Delete
    2. Haha...I want thinned out hair! That is exactly what I begged for when I got my last cut - to thin it out as much as possible! I'm guessing then that its only people with curly hair who want it thinned out as it always looks so thick and boofy!

      Delete
    3. I always get my hair thinned out! Every hair dresser I've ever gone to has said "wow, your hair is so thick" but it isn't curly, so I don't even have that benefit! Just wavy, thick, pain in the *&^ hair :) Lilit, your posts have made me want to change up my hair ... !

      Delete
    4. Sarah & Emma, well you too just have enviously thick hair if you want it thinned out! LOL, yes I can understand why some people need their hair thinned out, but some hairdressers seem to be very trigger happy when it comes to those thinning scissors and use them on everyone.
Emma - you def should change up your hair!

  16. Lilit, I truly believe that you look gorgeous, that this hair cut actually really suits you and that you look beautifully polished (but in an edgy way! However I can totally understand your justified frustration at not getting what you asked for. It is also sooo rude that he didn't listen to what you were saying despite repeating yourself several times (which by the way, is also not ok). Whilst I don't have a total freak out story, I have had my fair share of experiences where the hair dresser just doesn't listen and simply suggests "what's in". I get sick of this as more often than not, "what in" just doesn't suit my face shape and I'm also not trying to be a clone. Hang in and definitely give some GHD curls a try xo

  17. I get really cheap haircuts nowadays because 50% of the time I love it and it's amazing. I know 50% doesn't sound very good but I noticed I have the same rate of success with places that charge 3-10x what the cheapo men's barbers charge -_-

    1. Well funny you say that, as I went to another hairdresser yesterday that my mum uses to get my hair fixed up. She charged me 1/3rd the price of this first guy and did a fantastic job. So yep, price doesn't always mean quality!

  18. I think so many people have had bad experiences with hairdressers! The two worst ones that I have had were when I was on holiday in Canberra I walked into a suburban hairdresser for just a wash and blow-dry. The shampoo was terrible - didn't get close to the hairline. And then the person that they had do the blow-dry was not a hairdresser at all, he seemed like the day 2 apprentice who sweeps the floor. His blowdrying technique was to limply hold my hair with a brush and wave the hairdryer at it. I have extremely thick, coarse frizzy hair that needs strong pulling and good heat. It got so bad I actually asked for the manager who came over and acted like I was some sort of serial whinger when I pointed out the mess my hair was. She finished it off herself looking like she had sucked a lemon - very uncomfortable. I walked out and promptly burst into tears lol.
And I had the worst haircut of my like about two years ago. The hairdresser said she would "thin out" my shoulder length hair. That ended up involving hacking out chunks that literally resulted in 10cm chunks sticking out at the crown. I looked like Kirsten Stewart from the movie The Runaways for about a year. And no I never complained, sigh...
    Great post!

    1. Oh I absolutely hate when sometimes hairdressers make you feel like the biggest whinger if you so much as express dissatisfaction. How do they expect to get and keep customers when acting that way. And KS from The Runaways, LOL. I do hope your hair is back to normal now! :)

  19. HUGS!!! I think it looks lovely, but you are right, it is NOT what you wanted!

My horror story - I went to get my hair cut, I like my ends to be thinned out, because, well, because I like it that way. So I wanted my hair to be just thinned out and about 1-2cm taken off. The girl cut it blunt and she cut off around 4cm. I then stated the obvious - "I wanted this to be thinned out, not blunt". Then she fixed t - another 3cm gone. I never ever ever went back and was fuuuuuming. And when you are not happy, you won't go back even if they tell you it will be perfect next time. It's just too much hair to risk!
