And the answer is....

Thanks everyone for having a guess at the previous post, which makeup cost $100 and which cost $300. The answer was...

Look 1 cost over $300 and Look 2 cost less than $100. Quite a few of you guessed correctly! Wow, I'm impressed, you really know your makeup. One person even guessed what the colour of the lipstick in Look 1 was... yes, I am looking at you Stephanie! It was my all time favourite lippy, MAC Impassioned. Seriously though, how did you guys know???

Here are some more close up shots of each look.

Well, are you ready for a breakdown of the products used in each look? All prices are in Australian dollars.

Look 1
MAC Studio Sculpt foundation in NC25 - $52
MAC MSFN powder in Medium - $47
Urban Decay Naked2 Palette from Beauty Bay - $55
NARS blush/bronzer duo in Orgasm/Laguna - $66
MAC lipstick in Impassioned - $36
L'Oreal Color Riche Eyebrow pencil in Brown - $22.95
Elizabeth Arden Mascara* - $35
Australis Curve Ink Eyeliner - $11.95
TOTAL - $325.90

Look 2
Sleek Oh So Special palette from Crush Cosmetics - $19.95
BYS blush in Coral - $4.95
BYS lipstick in Revenge - $3.95
Rimmel eyebrow pencil in Black/Brown - $8.95
Maybelline LOL Great Lash Mascara - $12.95
L'Oreal Nude Magique BB Powder in Medium* - approx $21
Australis Curve Ink Eyeliner in Black* - $11.95 on sale
Rimmel Match Perfection foundation in Ivory - $14.95 on sale
TOTAL - $98.65

In normal every day life I don't make a conscious effort to only use budget products, or only use expensive products. I use whatever I appeals at the time. You can get some great quality products for not a lot of money at all. The BYS blush in Coral is extremely pigmented, and a pretty good dupe for NARS Orgasm but costs less than $5.00. And the Sleek Oh So Special palette has a great mix of wearable and pigmented colours suitable for every day wear. You'll also notice that I used the Australis liquid eyeliner (a cheapie) in both looks, that's because I don't own a more expensive liner and I don't see the need for it as this one is perfect. The only product I don't use regularly is the Rimmel foundation as it's far too pink toned for me. Actually the only problem with cheaper foundations is the limited colour choices so that's the only area I'd recommend spending more money on.

I hope you enjoyed this post! If you're a blogger I'd love it if you can do a similar post on your blogs using budget and expensive products, and feel free to leave the link here for others to see. If I get enough people doing a similar post I'll feature a collection of it on my blog.

Thanks for reading!

  2. Ahh I love this post! For me, the giveaway that the first look is the $300 is the foundation- many more "drugstore" foundations have a pink base (not all of course, but a lot are). I actually really like the Maybelline mascara- it gives a much natural and nicer look on your lashes than the Elizabeth Arden one! From a distance the lipsticks look so similar and you wouldn't be able to tell that one was $36 and another $4! However up close you can definitely see how much better the texture of the MAC lipstick is :) Keep these posts coming!

    1. I actually find the opposite-- most cheap brands (and most expensive brands for that matter) have foundation shades that are far too yellow for me. Prime examples are Revlon/Almay and Rimmel, until the new Match Perfection arrived. It baffles me how Bobbi Brown can go all out and say that every single person really has a yellow undertone so they'll only make yellow-based foundation.

    2. Thanks Karen! Yeah the Rimmel foundation was not a good colour match for me at all, it was far too pink based. And seriously the BYS lippies are fabulous. Sure, they're not as good as MAC but considering they're $4 you can't go wrong!

    3. @Rachel, oh really re the foundations? I haven't tried Almay but most Revlon/Rimmels are too pink for me! I must have really yellow undertones! And that's just a huge generalisation from BB re most people having yellow undertones. Maybe she needs to travel the world more and see all the different skintones people have. :)

  6. Honestly, my first hint was the mascara which looks way better on the first photo. Also, the makeup as whole looks more 'done' and sharp on the first photo :) I guess beauty bloggers develop this sense :D

    1. The mascara does look so much better doesn't it? Makes my lashes look way longer than the Maybelline one.
      Good pick! :)

  8. This is a great post! I love both looks on you, and it was interesting to see which products you used. I have the Sleek palette but have barely used it -- after seeing this I might pull it out of hiding! Xx

    1. You know I hardly use the Sleek palette too, but the colours are so versatile I'm going to make a conscious effort to use it more often. xo
