Benefit They're Real mascara review

I'm normally a drugstore mascara type of girl. Many years ago I used to buy expensive department store mascaras that cost over $45 AUD but frankly none of them gave me the type of volume and separation that I didn't already get from cheaper brands.

The one I'm reviewing today is a department store one. This mini sized They're Real mascara by Benefit was included in my "She's so Jetset"* kit which I reviewed previously HERE.

What they say
They're real! lengthens, curls, volumizes, lifts & separates. Our jet black, long-wearing formula won’t smudge or dry out. A specially designed brush reveals lashes you never knew you had!

What I say
Overall it's a pretty good mascara which gave great definition to lashes without clumping them together. I'm a fan of the plastic wand especially for the bottom lashes as it makes it easy to capture the finer hairs. However what I disliked was how crunchy and stiff it made my lashes. They felt so dry that it actually hurt to touch my lashes. Pity, because I do like the look of the mascara on my lashes.

Here's a photo of how it looks on my lashes. (Please excuse the unruly eyebrows, I just haven't had time to tame them, what with my 6 month old boy keeping me busy. Ok ok, even when I have the time I'm just too lazy to do my brows!)
Wearing Benefit "They're Real" mascara

Pros
- Separates lashes
- Does not flake
- Provides adequate volume
- Does not smudge
- Great jet black colour

Cons
- Makes lashes "crunchy"
- Difficult to wash off
- Expensive (AUD $38 or US $23)

Bottom line
Unfortunately this is not for me. Despite the fact that I liked how it looked on my lashes, I really did not like the way it made my lashes feel, i.e. stiff and uncomfortable. I'm sticking to my drugstore brands :)

Have you tried this mascara? What do you think of it?

  6. Ugh, crunchy lashes. I love that cheap mascaras come out on top nearly every time!

    1. Yep, I agree! Why waste money as the cheaper mascaras do just as good a job as the exxy ones.

  7. Yeah, I tried it and didn't like it either! It was absolutely difficult to remove (without unnecessary tugging and pulling around the skin) and I found it just didn't provide any thickness or volume at all.

    1. I actually thought I'd accidentally gotten a waterproof version, it was THAT hard to remove, but turns out it's just a normal version. Meh, i'll be leaving this.

  8. I LOVED THIS too but I also HATE crunchy eyelashes! I thought I was the only person that thought this. Sigh, I think the only way for me to get what I want is to just get eyelash extensions.

    1. Oh I can't stand crunchy lashes, it actually somehow hurts my eyes! I used to love Maybelline Full n' Soft because they never made my lashes crunchy but now I can hardly find those at the shops.

  9. I didn't love this mascara either! I found that it wasn't very good at separating my lashes. Drugstore mascaras are much better!
