5 Tips for wearing bright lipsticks

Up until about 2 years ago the only colours I wore on my lips were nude, nude and more nude. Sometimes if I was feeling adventurous I might choose pinky-nude. You get the gist I'm sure. And now? Now I hardly touch my nude lipsticks instead favouring my brights. The brighter, the more vibrant the better!

If you're like the me of 2 years ago that was afraid of colour, here are my 5 tips to wearing a bright lipstick without fear.

My 5 tips for wearing bright lipsticks

1. Keep eye makeup minimal
The focus is going to be on your lips, you don't want them to compete with your eyes. So either skip the eyeshadow and do a cat eye, or skip the eyeliner and do a wash of colour all over the lid. Both options will keep the focus on your lips whilst still giving your eyes definition.

2. Contrast the texture of your lips and cheeks
To make sure your face doesn't look flat, don't wear matte lips with a matte face. Instead achieve balance and dimension by wearing matte lips with luminous cheeks, or glossy lips with matte cheeks.

3. Skip the lipliner
I know this probably contradicts a lot of beauty advice you might have read but I find lining my lips makes me look too "done up", whereas skipping the liner gives a more casual and wearable look no matter how bright the lipstick.

4. Contrast your lips and eyes
This is for the more adventurous out there. To make your lip colour really pop, wear contrasting eyeshadow, e.g. if you're doing a warm lip, wear cool eyeshadows and vice versa.

5. Go sheer
If you're just starting to venture into brights territory then going sheer is the answer. It still gives a nice pop of colour but because it lets the natural colour of your lips show through it's more customized to your colouring.

  4. I've always loved bright lipstick. It's very rare I find a nude that doesn't wash me out but bright lippie always makes me look much fresher.

My favourites are NARS Schiap and YSL Glossy Stains in 11 and 14.

  12. Thanks for these tips! I've been slowly trying to break out of the fear of brights phase for years... I think before it really had to do with the fact that it just *didn't* look good on me because I was too young (I'm 24 now). My face still looked very youthful and bright lip shades just looked too out of place... now that I'm a little bit older I think my facial features have matured enough that bright lip shades look better. I've also discovered I wear them better with a bit of a tan, so now all that's left is just getting into the habit!

    1. I felt the same way! ie when I was younger I thought it made me look too comical, almost like I'm wearing my mum's lipstick but now I can't get enough of brights. I'm glad you're getting into them now, they're an easy way to dress up any look.

  21. Sigh, I'm still the you 2 years ago and even though I decided to try on a bright lipstick, I instantly scared my bf away because he wasn't used to or I must have done something incredibly wrong. :[

    1. Don't worry my husband also got scared off at first when I started wearing bright lips, now he's used to it! Just keep trying, wear your bright lippy around the house first to get used to colour on your face before you venture outside. :)

  22. I tend to stick to bold lipsticks as a rule, because other kinds just don't show up on me. I loved all your tips! I think morange is still my favorite bright, haha. Ah! I had a question for you. I bought Obey and another Illamasqua lipstick and the texture of the bullet is really hard and waxy. It clumps and lines on my lips something awful. Is the bullet always that hard or do you think maybe I got two bad ones? I can barely get the color to show D:

    1. Hi Eden, I know you're a bold lipstick lover! Yeah I think with your skintone bold tones look best on you :)
As for Obey, mine is fairly dry but not so bad that I can't apply it. Maybe try leaving it out in the sun for a bit to melt it a bit? I hope you didn't end up with duds!
