The $100 FOTD challenge

I decided to set myself a challenge, to see whether I can do a full face of make up using products that add up to less than $100.

Those living in the US might think $100 is quite a lot, but when you bear in mind that makeup in Australia is ridiculously expensive, (e.g. we're paying around $40 for a Revlon foundation or $20 for a CG mascara!) then $100 is not a lot to play with.

So using only products that I already had in my stash, here is the look that I came up with.

Please note I haven't included the cost of my moisturiser (I use MooGoo cream which is less than $20) in this lot as that's not a makeup item. And I don't normally use primers anyway, so I haven't used one here either.

Foundation: Rimmel Match Perfect foundation in Ivory- $18.95 (from Big W)
Powder: L'Oreal True Match in W3 $21.95 (from Big W)
Blush - L.A. Colours Mineral Blush in Just Peachy - $4.95 (from Cosmo Cosmetics)
Eyes - Wet n Wild Silent Treatment Palette - $9.95 (from Crush Cosmetics)
Eyeliner - Jordana Color Extend in Black - $6.95 (from Cosmo Cosmetics)
Mascara - Covergirl Lash Blast - $17.95 (from Priceline)
Eyebrow Pencil - Rimmel $8.50 (from Priceline)
Lipstick - BYS Beautifully Bare - $3.95 (from Gloss)
Total - $93.15

I was able to meet the challenge and have some spare cash for a coffee... and a muffin! I could of course use even cheaper cosmetics, i.e. FOA and Australis do much cheaper products than the ones I used, but since I was only using products I already had I didn't want to go out and buy cheaper makeup. That would defeat the purpose of the challenge!

So, can you do a full face of makeup in under a $100? I'd love it if you would do this challenge too, and feel free to post the link in the comments.

    1. I usually just buy them online, even with shipping costs it's still cheaper than paying OZ prices.

  3. Wow! I love this! Very lovely :) I am loving that lip color on you. It makes me want to shop for more nude lippies, LOL!

  4. You look great!
I can't believe how expensive make up is in Australia!
Some products are quite too expensive in Italy as well, a Revlon foundation is around 24 euro, but usually we have quite fair prices.

  7. I've tried, and failed, many times to get over how expensive makeup is in Australia. Just can't do it. Insane. I could do a less than $100 face no problem, but I totally see how Aussies would have trouble with it. Insane. :(

    1. Yep, makes no sense to us either especially since our dollar is worth the same, if not more than US dollar.

  8. Looking gorgeous there Lilit even with products under $100. I will definitely do this challenge when I am back in Australia.

And yes, prices in australia is beyond ridiculous. I could buy a Chanel lipstick in duty free at the price of a Revlon lippie in Aus!

  9. You created such a beautiful look! Not sure if I'd be able to do it myself, unless I picked all indie products or US products that aren't available here (which would kind of be like cheating :P)

  12. Hi Lilit, you look beautiful! I love combining a smokey eye and a nude lip. I'm glad that you mentioned that makeup here in Australia is SO expensive. I feel like I am constantly saying this to people living outside of Oz. The prices really are ridiculous. We're importing/exporting so much more now and our dollar is pretty good lately, so you'd think that it would carry on to cosmetics! It's a pricey choice to be an Australian Beauty Blogger.

    1. I agree! Very pricey indeed... which is why no one can blame us for turning to online shopping!

  14. Gorgeous FOTD and excellent way of opening another discussion on ridiculous Australian prices. No wonder we shop so much online. Hopefully cosmetic companies start listening.

  15. sigh, why is australian makeup SO EXPENSIVE?? it makes me sad. I agree with Jo, no wonder so much of my money is spent online.

PS. you look beautiful, I love your under $100 face. i do think I will have a go at this on my blog :)

  16. Is there a particular reason its so expensive? I could do a less than $100 face for sure but D: it's so awful that it's expensive for you. :3 Even on a budget you look gorgeous!

    1. Try as I do, I can't find a reason for it! Our dollar is on par with US dollar, so it can't be the foreign exchange rates. Most ppl think it's taxes, but the tax is on 10%, so that doesn't explain why there's sometimes up to 300% mark up on the products. Annoying!

  25. I know this is an old post, but I've been enjoying your blog and doing a ton of back reading. But I got to this post and choked on my coffee! (It's early morning here.)

Those prices! I paid $5 or 6 for that foundation. And WnW, Jordana, and LA Colors are the cheapest of cheap here. None of those items would have been more than $3 and probably less with sales and coupons. I don't think I could afford to wear makeup if I lived in OZ!

    1. Hi Donna, thanks so much for your comment and I'm glad you're enjoying my posts :-)
Oh yes, makeup here is just ridiculous! That's why we try to do as much online shopping as possible and buy from the US as even with international shipping things still end up costing less than they would here. Well, hope you enjoy your coffee! It's late evening here and as much as I'd love a coffee right now I probably shouldn't :)
