Back 2 MAC: Pink Plaid lipstick - swatches, comparison and look

After my depotting and reorganising my eyeshadow palettes recently (post HERE) I ended up with a few empty MAC cases and you know what that means. That's right, it's Back 2 MAC time. In case there are readers that don't know it, you can take back any 6 empty MAC product cases and get your choice of lipstick for FREE. In some countries you can get an eyeshadow instead of a lipstick, but I've only ever been offered a lipstick.

I went to MAC to get my free lipstick without having done prior research or made prior plans as to what lipstick I wanted to get. I thought I'll just go and see what catches my eye. And the one that caught my eye was this, Pink Plaid.

It's a muted mauvey pink with blue undertones. I don't know why some reviews have called it a barbie pink because this is absolutely nothing like the barbie pinks I imagine.  It's a matte formula so it is a tad drying, but that's what happens with mattes.

For me this colour is very very close to my natural lip colour and it hardly looks like I've got lipstick on when I wear it. But I don't mind, it's good for those days when I can't be bothered making too much of an effort.

I decided to get the good old GHD out of hibernation and straighten my hair... only problem with that is I didn't realise how out of control my fringe has become!

Comparison to other pink lipsticks
In the photo above I've compared Pink Plaid to other colours I thought were similar. It's a slightly darker version of Revlon Pink Pout, though they're not dupes. Snob is definitely much more cooler toned and Pink Blush is brighter and slightly more warmer toned.

Overall for me this is not a must-have colour. It gives a nice natural look, but it's not anything special, especially not for the price that we pay for MAC lipsticks here in Australia.

Have you tried this lipstick? What products have you been disappointed in lately?

  1. It's a nice colour, and I also like Pink Pout. How does it compare to Angel?

  2. Ms Bubu - I've ran out of Angel otherwise I would have done a comparison swatch, but Angel is more sheer and a paler pink. This is more blue toned.

  3. Look at you with your hair straight! So pretty! :)
It is a nice lipstick... I've swatched it in store before but something else has always grabbed my attention.

  8. I love your makeup here. Pink Plaid looks very natural on you, very pretty. I agree though, the color overall isn't anything special.

  9. Laiqah - it's been ages since I straightened my hair, not used to it! Now I need to decide what to do with the fringe.

Clare - I'd never seen this before either, which is weird as it's in the permanent line. Maybe you got swayed by the bolder colours out there!

Elly - you'd definitely need to put lip balm on first as it's drying if you do decide to get it.

Sahar - thanks so much hun.

    StealMyHeartLove - Thanks so much!

Lerina - it's definitely a natural look lippy, which I'm not used to as I like them either really bright or bold enough to stand out! But it was free, so can't complain.

  10. I did a thing on Pink Plaid a while ago - because I'd bought it being assured it was perfect for a medium-dark toned gal, but it really doesn't work for me at all. It makes me look sallow and sickly. : ( ON THE PLUS SIDE. It makes a great base or cooling shade for layered-lipstick days.

  12. Hmm, not sure I could ever get a Mac pink lipstick with a matte finish, although this one looks lovely on you. I've still to finish 6 Mac products for back2Mac, sigh...

  13. Did u go to a MAC counter or a PRO store? I went to a counter at DJs and they said they weren't doing back to MAC with depotted Eyeshadows anymore.

  14. Hi Julesmond, I went to a MAC counter at Myer. I've never had problems with depotted eyeshadows so hopefully it's not a new thing they're doing by not accepting it for B2M.

  15. Hi there, just found your blog and it is really amazing - love it and will follow you from Hungary.

To be honest, I've never seen this colour here but will try tomorrow as it looks really good on you.

I'm using two MAC lipsticks - one is Creme'd Nude and the other favourite is the very first Gaga lipstick. On my wishlist there are two lipsticks from MAC: Snob, Angel and Hue.

Other lip product I have from MAC is my all time favourite - Fantabulous Dazzleglass lipgloss - looks amazing!

One last thing: MAC is really expensive in Hungary as well, but fortunately they do kind of 'sales' in every six months when you can buy MAC products 20 percent less.

Good luck with your blog and will 'talk' soon! :)
