NARS Dogon eyeshadow - review, photos & swatches

Remember when I bought my Tarte Amazonian Clay Blushes (reviewed HERE) I mentioned that there was one other item I purchased? Well my dears, it was Dogon eyeshadow by NARS.

NARS Dogon is a limited edition shade and I will be honest here... when it first arrived in the mail and I took it out, it looked nothing special. Just some beige/taupe and a chalky looking charcoal.

Then I swatched it... and magic happened.

NARS Dogon - the picture doesn't capture how beautiful the colours are.
The beige/taupe turned into a metallic taupe with duochrome shimmer. It's very hard to photograph and capture the effect on film. The dark shade is still a fairly matte charcoal, but it pairs perfectly with the taupe. Blended together you get a steel grey shade with duochrome shimmer.

The two colours paired together are perfect for a dark smokey eye.

And you can also wear just the shimmery taupe on it's own for a neutral eye with a difference but I prefer it worn together with the dark colour in the outer V to give some definition. I also use the dark shade to line my eyes instead of using a liner.

This is my first eyeshadow from NARS, and the reason I didn't jump on the bandwagon earlier? Price! Readers from outside Australia might be shocked to hear how much this very same eyeshadow retails for here.... $72AUD (or $78US or 54 Euro or 48GBP) when in the US it's actually around $33, yes, less than half the price it sells for here at the shops.

I bought mine from a really reputable ebay seller called M-A-C Lover for $35 when I bought my Tarte blushes, so the combined postage was $6.99. As you can see even with the postage buying online for me was definitely cheaper than buying from the stores here.

Have you got any NARS eyeshadows? What do you think of the crazy inflated prices here in Australia?

  3. I think it's rediculous. I can't just go into a store and buy something. I have to go and swatch it, then look online for a decent price. So annoying.

  4. I was shocked when I first found out the price difference of certain brands in different parts of the world. It's crazy!
I really love NARS shadows, especially the duos because they are a better bang for your buck!
Dogon looks like a beautiful pair! I love that you can do an entire smokey eye with just the 1 duo.

Congrats on your NARS purchase! =)

  5. They look amazing! The prices are ridiculous in Australia and it's not just Nars. Brands like clinique, Bobbi Brown and M.A.C all have hugely inflated prices, So not fair!

  6. So gorgeous! I have been wanting to try Nars shadows out for ages but couldn't justify the price.

Prices in Oz are just insane. Dior Amber Diamond which I recently purchased online for $37 (free shipping) is $78 in store... MAC is over twice the price and even the drugstore items are super expensive. Like Revlon Colourstay is around $38 which is almost the same price as Nars Sheer Glow online..it's like whats the point of even shopping in Oz when you can get it half price online. Haha sorry for my rant, I just don't get how they can get away with it and who actually pays these prices for the products???

  12. I just got this duo recently as well and it is absolutely gorgeous! I got mine from Kiss and Makeup for $42.95 plus shipping, I just could not justify buying it in oz as well. I also have Rajasthan which I got in a blog sale which led me to buying Dogon! Now I'll probably be addicted to Nars duos :( bad for my wallet I think!

  24. Thank you so much for your comments everyone, I'm glad you found the swatches and photos useful... and sigh... nars is sooo soo expensive here, i doubt i'll be buying any more of them.

@Sylvie - i'm glad you like the mix of high end and budget, my makeup bag is pretty much a mix of products of all prices as price doesn't necessarily equal better quality.
