NARS Desire Blush - review, swatches and comparison

After lipstick, blushes are my favourite cosmetic item. I had been lusting after this blush for a long time, but  the exorbitant price of it here in Australia always put me off getting it. Even with their recent price drop they retail for $49 in AU, almost double what it sells for in the US.

A few weeks ago I was in Melbourne for work, wasting time in the evening at Myer Bourke St Mall (how very smart that they're open till 9pm everyday!) and kept walking past Mecca Cosmetica, swatching Desire, and trying to convince myself I didn't need it. Then I remembered that I had a  $20 Myer One gift voucher, technically making the blush only $29 and before I knew it this baby was mine.

I'm very much into matte blushes at the moment, and this is a lovely matte bright pink that's super pigmented (as is expected from NARS). In fact it's a little bit too pigmented, because the first time I used it I ended up looking like a clown and had to wipe off the excess with tissues before I looked decent enough to leave the house.

Heavy swatch in the pink at top right... looks scary
Blended lightly on the cheek, however, looks lovely and fresh

In comparison to my other matte pink blush, Illamasqua Hussy (reviewed originally HERE) Desire is definitely more cool toned.

This is a perfect winter pink I suppose, whereas Hussy is more of a summer pink if you know what I mean.

Have you tried any of these blushes before?
What is your favourite pink blush?

  1. This looks similar to E.L.F studio blush in Fuchsia Fusion, although that has a fair bit of shimmer in the pan.

    The Nars blush looks like such a pretty colour and I wasn't expecting it to be so wearable on, but it looks really nice on you and not scary at all! xo

  2. I kinda reminds me of MAC's Her Blooming Cheeks which was a LE from the Tartan collection.. Except that this is slightly lighter.. But how amazing are bright blushes huh?!

  3. Desire looks gorgeous in the pan, swatched and on your cheeks~

    I don't work well with highly pigmented blushes. Most of the time I would like to quickly slap the product on my cheeks without having to use a light hand.

    My favourite pink blush is by Shu Uemura a cooled toned pastel pink =)

  8. @Katie Marie - Ooh I don't doubt elf would have a dupe for this, they seem to do pretty good nars dupes at like a fraction of the price! This one has absolutely no shimmer, and brushed on very lightly it looks great. Trust me, first time I used it it was scary bright!

    @Delyteful Speaks - I didn't even see that one in the Tartan collection. And oh yeah, loving bright cheeks. Makes you look instantly awake and made up with a swipe of the bruss.

    @PopBlush - thanks hun, this was scary at first too, but worn lightly it's pretty wearable. I'm yet to try anything from Shu Uemura would you believe.

    @Michelle - thank you

    @Hannah - I might have seen it on your blog ages ago, yep I def like it :0)

    @Kelly - thanks hun

    @Paintedinblack - as long as you're light handed with it you should be ok, otherwise it's very easy to go overboard with this colour.

  9. @VijiiS - Illamasqua Hussy is definitely one of my favourite warm pinks, it's so easy to wear. But this nars one is great in the cooler months... check them out if you get the chance.

  10. Have not tried them.. to be honest I am not a blush girl. Usually I am using a bronzer as a blush.
    But I do love the Illamasqua shade!

  12. I've been wanting to try out Taj Mahal? The orange nars blush - but it's too shimmery for my tastes. I think this looks fab on you - you manage to pull off cool blushes better than anyone I know. I think i'll stick to warmer blushes myself.

  15. This was JUST the review I needed! I've been thinking about getting a another pink blush and these two are big contenders.

    Desire looks very cool and blue toned. Do you think it would look ok on a medium skin tone with heavy yellow undertones?

    Btw I LOVE how Myer on Bourke St stays opens so late too!

  16. @PetitDerriere - I'm glad this is helpful! I've got fairly yellow undertones too and i can get away it with. Maybe to be on the safe side have a play with it at Mecca first to make sure it suits you before committing to it. They're obviously not cheap, so you want to make sure they suit you.

  17. I have both and Hussy looks much better in my african american skin. Its more natural looking and is a really nice watermelon pink. Although i favor Illamasquas color I prefer NARS formula. NARS is longer lasting on me and less powdery
